Can diabetics wear high heels?

If it is possible, avoid high-heeled shoes if you’re diabetic and wear recommended diabetic shoes for women. High heels are not recommended as they exert pressure on the ball of your foot. In case you’ve nerve damage, it becomes difficult to realize the area is getting calluses or sore as a result of wearing high heels. Also, high heels can result to balance challenges, particularly if you’ve neuropathy.

As aforementioned, you’re at high risk of developing open sores on the bottom of your feet or on your toes. Additionally, you can have corns, gangrene, bunions, and fungal infections in the thick areas of hardened skin. Two years ago, I had neuropathy in my feet and after I normalized the blood sugars, the pain disappeared. Afterwards, I was able to wear high heels once in a while.

  • Get to healthy weight

There is a possibility that you’re overweight. If you happen to be overweight, don’t try to wear your high heels as the amount of pressure that you will put in your feet may be too much that it can hurt you. If you can lose the weight to a normal level, then you’re can try to wear the cool shoes.

  • Exercise

It is essential that you exercise every day. A little stretch will improve circulation of blood to your feet. it is essential that if you’re diabetic, you engage in different sports that helps to improve circulation such as Yoga.

  • Don’t buy cheap shoes

If you’ve made a choice to wear high heels, you should buy a comfy pair. Actually, it is better that you buy one comfy shoe that makes you feel good than having a dozen pair that kills your feet. In case you try the shoes and you feel that they are uncomfy when you try at the store, it means that they will hurt you when you wear it for a couple of hours.

A diabetic with no real foot challenge can wear a comfortable and well-fitting shoe. However, if you develop diabetic foot challenges, a doctor can give you the following shoe options:

i. In-depth Shoes

They’re ¼ to ½ inch deeper than the ordinary shoes. The additional room can accommodate foot problems such as hammertoes and calluses. The shoe offers you generous room for inserts in case you need them.

ii. Healing Shoes

The shoes are worn whilst you recover from a foot surgery. The shoes are in the form of diabetic slippers for women, sandals or closed-toe versions and they help your feet to heal without minimal or no stress.

iii. Custom-made shoes

The shoes are made from a mold of your foot. This is an option for people with deformity.  

How many pairs of shoes should a person with diabetes have?

If you’re diabetic, purchase at least two pairs of shoes that will give you good support. The shoes may likely have diverse pressure points on your feet and changing them daily can offer relief to your legs. Also, if you don’t wear a single shoe daily, it will get to air out and dry eradicating the chances of bacteria or fungi growth.

Being active is good for diabetics. Nonetheless, before you start any exercise, you should consult your doctor to ensure that it is safe for you. Getting active will help you to:

  • Keep your weight down
  • Lower your blood sugar levels
